Are students given equal opportunities in the international classroom or could our teaching by biased in any problematic way? For this webinar, Hanne Tange, Rachel Forsyth and Tobias Axelsson gave presentations, based on their research and teaching experience, on perceptions and challenges in the international classroom and suggested how we can deal with for example different experiences, understandings and expressions related to learning, interaction, teaching and knowledge.

The follow-up workshop was open to staff at Lund and Malmö Universities. Participants were encouraged to bring their own teaching dilemmas and challenges. 

About the presenters
 

Dr Hanne Tange is Associate Professor at Aalborg University, Department of Culture and learning. Her research is within the following areas: language politics & practice, intercultural encounters in the international classroom, and academic socialisation and curricular contexts. In 2020 she published the book Teaching Practices in a Global Learning Environment: An Interdisciplinary Take on International Education (Routledge 2020). 

Dr Rachel Forsyth has been head of the University teaching Academy at Manchester Metropolitan University, and has been working extensively on widening participation and inclusive teaching. Her research interests focus on institutional change around higher education, particularly in relation to inclusive learning communities and assessment. From December 2021 she is working at Lund University. 

Dr Tobias Axelsson is Senior lecturer in Economic history at Lund University. His research is on the economic dynamics of colonialization and on the structural transformation process on the road towards modern economic growth. He has long experience of teaching international students and was for many years director of studies for Lund University’s first international bachelor programme, Bachelor's in Development Studies.
