In SVT’s major documentary series Historien om Sverige, over 300 experts contribute their knowledge – and one of them is Johanna Bergqvist Rydén, Adjunct Senior Lecturer here at the Division for Higher Education (AHU), but she has a background in archaeology. In episode 4, Gud ger och Gud tar, she shares her expertise in historical archaeology.

Historien om Sverige is an ambitious documentary series that explores Sweden’s history from the Ice Age to the present day. The series consists of ten episodes and features reconstructions of historical events and figures. Simon J Berger is the series' narrator.

Johanna Bergqvist Rydén has a background in archaeology and earned her PhD in Historical Archaeology at Lund University in 2013. Her research focuses on perceptions of disease and medical practice in Sweden during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Today, she works as an educational developer at AHU, where she teaches and conducts research in higher education pedagogy.

In the episode Gud ger och Gud tar, which covers Sweden’s history from the 12th century to the late 14th century, the documentary explores a period of economic prosperity and population growth, followed by great challenges as the plague struck and wiped out a third of the population. Johanna Bergqvist Rydén contributes her expertise on this era.
